An exhibition of beautiful photographs and prints by Darrel Sheffield is being displayed in Trahern Gallery 108. The reception is at 5pm on March 28, 2013.

“My show is a beautiful juxtaposition of nude figures and images of war that represent my struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and my therapy to balance my mind. “Re/Touch” Senior Visual Communication Exhibition Opens on December 5th

re-touch_poster.jpg

Re/Touch: the process of improving something with new touches, or alterations, to produce a finished work. This word not only represents the culmination of works presented this Fall in a show of the same name, but also the education and experiences of nine highly creative graduating designers at Austin Peay State University. Jacquelyn Cordy, D. L. Zartner, Andy Blankenship, Matt Mixon, Brian Williams, Shafia Choudhury, Amber Barry, Carolyn Madison, and Nathan Lee are part of a capstone course taught by Professor Paul Collins. Works featured in this exhibition will cover the creative bounds of of graphic design – from animation to book design to advertising – in a fully developed installation environment designed and built by the students.

Says Professor Collins, “Everyone interested in design and education would be well served by visiting this show because of the quality and dynamic range of the works shown, and more because this show was entirely and completely planned, organized and staged by these students. It’s simply incredible to see the drive, execution, vision and collaboration of these graduating seniors.”

Re/Touch opens in APSU’s Trahern Gallery on December 5 with reception at 5 p.m. That is free and open to the public. Gallery hours for viewing the exhibition are from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday-Friday and from noon-4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The show runs from Dec 5 until Dec 16th and is sponsored by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the APSU Department of Art, and viewing is free and open to the public.

For more information about Re/Touch, check out the show online (retouch.artapsu.com), follow on facebook, or contact the APSU Department of Art (931) 221-7333.

Reception for “Point of View” a Senior Thesis Exibition by Bee Orgain is November 17 from 5 – 7 pm

BeeOrgain_0012.jpg

“I am an artist presently attending APSU and in my final year for my Bachelor of Fine Arts. I create art as I am driven to do so. I aspire to create art works that, with expressive line and color, tell a narrative that will impact the viewer in an emotional way, allowing them to connect to both the piece and me as the artist.”

The show focuses on two aspects. First, the personal perspective of the artist. She has chosen subjects that had an impact in shaping the person she has become, such as growing up on a farm, having a miscarriage, and the unique qualities of being female.

The second aspect is the literal meaning of point of view. The compositions are non-traditional, inviting the viewer to see the subject in a new light. Some pieces, such as “Legs” are drawn from the perspective of the artist looking down, evaluating herself.

The opening and reception will be held in Trahern Gallery 108 (downstairs in the Trahern building) on November 17th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

Renyi Zhang’s Senior Exhibition “Reinterpretations of Still-Life” Opens April 18

Studio art major and first place winner of this year’s Austin Peay State University Annual Student Art Show, Renyi Zhang (also known as Isabel Forest), is going to present her work in a new exhibit, “Reinterpretations of Still-Life,” which opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 25, in the Trahern Student Gallery. The show runs through April 29th, and is free and open to the public.

Zhang’s work is easier to appreciate by understanding some of her artistic roots. She is influenced by Impressionism and Impressionist paintings, loving the idea of little, or small, bold brush strokes, combined with manipulations of light to reflect life. Yet she is also inspired by the blurring technique utilized by German visual artist Gerhard Richter.

Her work shows these different styles while also transcending them.

“No one should be tethered to a movement or person, for they are not that, and most movements are only understood in there waning moments,” she said. “What should and must stand alone is the work, which always lasts longer than the person or latest fad.”

For more information on the exhibit, contact the APSU Department of Art at 221-7333.

“AEffect” Jessica Rodriguez’s Senior Exhibition Opens April 11 at 7 pm

When you look at a person, all you can see is what is on the outside. It is hard to imagine what they are thinking or feeling, or what they have been through to get where they are today. All a person sees is the physical, weathering effects that human experiences have placed on the human body.

Senior artist Jessica Rodriguez has decided to look deeper than a person’s outer beauty with her new exhibit “AEffect,” which opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 11 at the Trahern Student Gallery. The exhibit runs through April 15.

Through her work in this show, Rodriguez examines the connections between the mental, emotional and physical aspects of humanity. Emotions like heartbreak and fear, paired with violence and confusion are common concepts in her artwork.
“It is the ability to think and feel that makes us truly dynamic beings,” she said, “but it is our capability to persevere through thick and thin that makes us who we are.”

Rodriguez is a readmit student who returned to APSU to finish her art degree. She took a three-year hiatus to work full-time as a certified pharmacy technician.

“I just felt like something was missing,” she said. “I needed to go back and get the B.F.A. I had spent so long working toward. I’m back and I feel like I’ve learned more in this last year than I ever did. Being back in the Trahern feels right.”
