Do-it-Yourself (DIY) Design Event at the Morgan University Center

Mark DeYoung
The collaborative, cultural organization, Jumping Dog Design is putting on a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Design Theory art project, where all-comers, designers and non-designers alike, are invited to create an artwork and express their opinion on design.  Proceeding from the premise that “Everything is Design & Everyone is a Designer,” this DIY drawing event is being held in the Student Design Group exhibition space on the 3rd floor of the Morgan University Center, Austin Peay State University.
“We create the future we can imagine. This DIY art project is a way in which we can encourage students to become participants, imagining design that connects with community. It’s a fun and playful project that encourages thinking about problem solving through a creative response,” said APSU Professor and Jumping Dog founder Mark DeYoung.
Existing as a kind of analog, social media experiment, responses may range from amusing and fun, to profound and provocative. During the event, creations and creators will be documented and the analog will go digital through Facebook. If you are interested in joining the fun, please stop by and participate from 8:00AM-5:00PM, Monday through Friday, November 5 – December 7 on the 3rd floor of the Morgan University Center, Austin Peay State University.

Mark DeYoung exhibited artwork at the Helsinki Design Week, in Helsinki Finland, an international, multi-media design event that was the culmination of Helsinki’s designation as the World Design Capital 2012 (International Design Council). His work and that of his collaborators was also featured in the Netherlands at the biannual Graphic Design Festival Breda, home of the world famous Graphic Design Museum. Closer to home, a collaborative installation was on display at the AIGA Nashville Think Tank.

These three related exhibits were held to launch his new creative group, Jumping Dog Design. The exhibits featured in various formats a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) design exhibit/performance where all- comers, designers and non-designers alike, were welcome to create an artwork and voice their opinion on design. The idea of the projects is to democratize the conversation on design, complimenting talks by leaders in design with those attending. “Enabling attendees to become participants is a fun way to encourage everyone to creativity and also to extend a dialog into what the role of the designer should be,” said Jumping Dog founder Mark DeYoung. “Helsinki and Breda are great international design cities and it was a real honor for the inaugural exhibits of Jumping Dog Design to be held there.”

If you are interested in the results, you can see the Helsinki Design Week, DIY Design Theory project on Jumping Dog Design/Facebook along with the exhibits/performances at the Graphic Design Festival Breda and the AIGA Nashville Think Tank, although the latter two are ongoing.

Professor Mark DeYoung To Present in the Provost Lecture Series

An Austin Peay State University art professor will present recent design work created through a sustainable, responsible production practice as part of APSU’s next Provost Lecture Series.

Mark DeYoung, assistant professor of art, will present at 3 p.m., Thursday, April 5 in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The event is free and open to the public.

His discussion will revolve around the idea that by extending designer involvement through the production of the designed work, the period of creative potential is extended.

“The broader impact of this effort will be to encourage responsible art/design practice, along with furthering the creation of a market for sustainable design and the uniqueness that can be found in the hand-crafted object,” DeYoung said.

DeYoung is an internationally known artist and an experienced designer. His work has been exhibited extensively, including at the well-known artist book exhibition the Künstlerbücher Editionen Multiples in Cologne, Germany; the Markiezenhof in The Netherlands; and the Frans Masereel Grafiek Centrum, Belgium. His work can be found in collections such as the Royal Museum of Fine Art, Belgium; the Ministry of Flemish Culture in Belgium; and the Center of Contemporary Art, The Netherlands. As a designer he has worked extensively with both cultural organizations and major corporations. Cultural organizations for which he has created designs include the Groninger Museum, Kröller-Müller Museum and The Natuurmuseum, The Netherlands. Corporate clients include GE, Boeing and Embraer.

Department of Art Adds Service-Learning Course to the Permanent Design Curriculum

DC_image.jpg

The department of art is now offering as a permanent course, Design Center, which is an advanced-level design course that provides graphic design students with the opportunity to work with actual clients. This service-learning course brings students together with clients in the non-profit sector to engage in our community, providing needed goods and services to solve real-life problems. The experiential learning method integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement and strengthen relationships that create community. Student designers collaborate with their clients: creating a contract of work to be accomplished, design and create media, evaluate the designs and lay the groundwork for a long-term working relationship. The course has been offered as a “special topics” course but will now become part of the permanent curriculum. Coursework varies greatly, but this semester students have had the wonderful opportunity to work for the Rivers & Spires Festival through partnering with the Economic Development Council of Greater Clarksville, The Clarksville Fire and Rescue, the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center and the Center of Teaching and Learning.

..So keep an eye out for Design Center which will be offered in the fall of 2012

Says Professor Collins, “Everyone interested in design and education would be well served by visiting this show because of the quality and dynamic range of the works shown, and more because this show was entirely and completely planned, organized and staged by these students.
