Well Known Book and Paper Artists Visit APSU This Week

Beck Whitehead, the director of the Picante Press & Paper Studio @ the Southwest School of Arts & Crafts in San Antonio, will arrive Monday April 18th and leave on Friday April 22. Beck has taught papermaking, pulp painting, and bookarts workshops at number of prestigious venues such as PBI, Penland, and John C Campbell. She is also a founding member and on the Board of Directors for Papermaking Magazine.

Wandering book artists Donna and Peter Thomas will stop by with their mobile Book Caravan on Wed, April 20th. Both groups share wide acclaim for their work. Peter and Donna Thomas live on the mid-coast in California. Their collaborative books are widely collected by museums and libraries. They have been awarded a number of travel grants and have published articles and books concerning contemporary papermaking in the Philippines and other emerging countries. They will be here working on April 20.

Professor Marsh featured in “Hand, Voice, Vision” at the Grolier Club in New York City

Professor Cindy Marsh has an artist book, “The Sporting Life” featured in the exhibition – “Hand, Voice, Vision” at the Grolier Club in New York City. The exhibit will run from Dec. 7, 2010 through Feb 5, 2011. The exhibition will travel to Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in 2011.

‘Surrender – The Books of Clifton Meador’

The exhibition, “Surrender – The Books of Clifton Meador,” is on display in the Trahern Gallery through today.

“Surrender,” curated by APSU art faculty members Cynthia Marsh and Warren Greene, features 26 artist books written, photographed, printed and bound by Clifton Meador. Currently, Meador is the director of the M.F.A. program in interdisciplinary studies at Columbia College in Chicago, Ill. He has received numerous international grants and residency opportunities to support his creative wanderlust and his unique vision concerning the historic narrative.

Meador will speak about his work as a book artist at 7 tonight in Trahern 401. A closing reception for the exhibition will follow from 8-9 p.m. in the Trahern Gallery.

An on-demand exhibition catalogue, designed by the artist with an introductory essay by Cynthia Marsh, is available through Lulu.com.

Support for the exhibition, “Surrender – The Books of Clifton Meador,” comes from the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the APSU Department of Art.
