Dr. Smithers co-organized three panels “The Violent Lives of Renaissance Artists in Italy” at the Renaissance Society of America conference in April 2013 in San Diego. These panels focused on the violence of Early Modern Italian artists—conceived broadly as brawling, murder, bad behavior, sexual violence, intense rivalry, and eccentric behavior. Her paper “Michelangelo’s Suicidal Stone” focused on how Michelangelo elicited a strong reaction from others by bringing out the colorful and unusual temperament in those in his realm (and the things in his realm?). When the stone quarried to be the pendant to David heard it was no longer to be carved by Michelangelo and instead Baccio Bandinelli, it jumped ship into the Arno! On one hand, Michelangelo attracted undying devotion from his admirers and close friends (and apparently his stones), and on the other, drew contempt from some contemporaries, such as Baccio. Dr. Smithers’ paper explored not only Michelangelo’s reactions to his peers, family, and friends, but also the reactions of others—patrons, collectors, art writers, artists, and stones alike—to him.

The name “Spectrum” hints at the idea that the graphic design students have very diverse styles of design. The show will consist of works by: Lucas Freeze, Susie Liberatore, Chad Malone, Jorden Gibby, Drew Holden, Chelsea Flatt, Briana MacArthur, and Josh Jones.

The exhibition’s works consist of a very large range of mediums, such as digital painting, illustration, packaging, typography, silkscreen, letterpress, web design, and photography.

Professor Mark DeYoung says, “This year we have a great group of graduating designers. They have taken to heart the importance of a personalized creative process, resulting in an interesting mix of exciting and individualized works.”

Alexander Wurts has been a member of the Trahern Living Gallery program since the fall semester of 2012. Alexander is a Junior at Austin Peay State University. He plans to graduate with a BFA in studio artand then attend a graduate school to receive an MFA. Alexander’s work is primarily focused on collages. He uses pieces of magazines, found books, and illustrations to combine into his projects. During his time in Living Gallery he has been a part of three exhibitions. The most recent was a collaborative effort with his gallery space partner, Tyler Foster. Tyler has also been a part of the Living Gallery since the fall semester of 2012. Tyler has been using his studio to make a series of large drawings based on family photographs from his childhood. Tyler is graduating this semester with a BFA in studio art, and plans to take some time off before pursuing an MFA. Tyler’s work usually consists of drawings in charcoal and graphite as well as oil paintings.

Alexander and Tyler have collaborated on two exhibitions since they’ve shared a studio in the Living Gallery. The exhibition, “Gash:Tear” ran in December of last year. One of Alexander’s contributions to the show featured a wooden panel painted white that gallery visitors were invited to destroy with a hammer. Tyler contributed multiple drawings that visitors were free to tear in half periodically throughout the show. In April 2013, the exhibition, “Works by Tyler Foster and Alexander Wurts” was presented in the Trahern Living Gallery. Tyler displayed multiple paintings of portraits and flowers. Alexander exhibited a series of photocopies. Each copy was made from a previous copies so that the original image eventually deteriorated after one hundred copies.

When asked about the benefits of having a Living Gallery space, Alexander said this “Having access to my own studio has really been a great benefit to the amount of work I can create. Its also nice having my friends around to offer up advice and ideas.
