Statement

Our work is based on several assumptions; first, that life is good, second, that two artists working together are better than one working alone, and third, that information is there for the taking. That said, we seek to create new works from both existing and original audio-visual information.

We are part of a long line of collage theorists extending from Kurt Schwitters to Kara Walker, from John Cage to Brian Eno.

Using the techniques of digital sound and video editing – both in the studio and in live performances – our work explores the history of cinema, the culture of the Internet, the richness of language, the pervasiveness of music and all the ways in which media intersect and interact to create new languages expressive of our time.

In 2001 Retold, we ripped a dvd of Kubrick’s classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey and divided it up by dvd chapters. We then asked a variety of people to watch one chapter and recorded their retelling of the narrative. The original movie was then re-edited to match this retelling.

New Popup Gallery Debuts in the Woodward Library with works by Anna Wagner

The Department of Art has invaded the Woodward Library with the installation of a new popup gallery. On view are some wonderful prints and sculpture by Ohio artist Anna Wagner in a show titled Mortal Strings. As part of the Art Department’s Living Gallery Program, the popup gallery which appeared in the Morgan University Center throughout the fall will host shows in the library throughout much of the Spring.

Artist Statement about Mortal Strings:

“As the range of our experience and opportunity grows, we must take heed that technological progress cannot erase the brutal reality of our inexplicable existence.  Like all living things, we are born, must struggle to survive, and die.  I suggest a counter proposal of exploration using found materials and traditional media.  Gravel, trash, weeds, bones and stones: there is an almost divine beauty in the detritus of ordinary life that seems to call out: ‘Stop, notice this moment! Here! Now!’  My work is made in praise of this tangible yet mystifying world that we have so much to learn from, if only we pause to notice it. ” – Anna Wagner

Greg Sand (’08) Presents “Traces” at the Framemaker

Greg Sand

The Framemaker proudly presents work by artist Greg Sand as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on December 6, 2012. An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit, entitled “Traces,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of December during normal business hours (Mon. through Fri. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.).
Greg Sand received his bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from Austin Peay State University in 2008. In 2009, Sand was selected by critic Catherine Edelman and the Griffin Museum of Photography as one of “the most exciting new artists emerging in the world of photography.”

Traces explores the themes of memory, the passage of time, and the photograph’s role in shaping our experience of loss. This series was created by removing the subjects from found photographs. Like the memories of passed loved ones, the reflections and shadows that remain vary in distortion and degree of clarity. These photographic mementos of the departed are left with only vestiges of the lives they once captured.

The Framemaker is located at the corner of North Second Street and Georgia Avenue, across from The Clarksville Academy.
