APSU Alum Greg Sand presents “Remnants” at the Framemaker

GregSand.jpg

The Framemaker proudly presents artist Greg Sand as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, September 1, 2011. An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit, titled “Remnants,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of September during normal business hours (Mon. through Fri. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.).

Greg Sand is an artist and photographer who explores the issues of existence, time and death. He works primarily with digital photography to produce work that addresses the nature of photography and its role in defining reality. Sand received his BFA in Photography from Austin Peay State University in 2008. He has won the acclaim of both jurors and audiences, winning numerous awards and honors. In 2009, Sand was selected by critic Catherine Edelman and the Griffin Museum of Photography as one of “the most exciting new artists emerging in the world of photography.” Sand currently produces work in Clarksville, Tennessee, and exhibits across the United States.

Greg Sand states, “Remnants is a series about recollection and remembrance. Each ‘remnant’ in the series is composed of three found photos–each from a different point in the subject’s life–that have been cut into strips and woven together to form a portrait of a person who has passed away. Remnants uses cloth as a metaphor for memory.”

Sand continues: “As Peter Stallybrass writes in Worn Worlds, ‘The magic of cloth is that it receives us: receives our smells, our sweat, our shape even.’ This is one of the marvels of memory as well: we perceive each moment in our lives; these are eventually woven together to form our memory. Each piece in this series creates a likeness of an individual that–rather than depicting an accurate visual representation of that person at any given time–presents a recollected coalescence of that person’s appearances throughout his or her life.”

Also on display will be work from Greg Sand’s series “Once Removed.”

The Framemaker is located at the corner of North Second Street and Georgia Avenue, across from The Clarksville Academy.

Lorna Lewis and Bee Orgain Exhibit at the Framemaker

legs.jpg

The Framemaker proudly presents artists and APSU alumni Lorna Lewis and Bee Orgain, as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on July 7, 2011. An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of July during normal business hours (Mon. through Fri. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.).

According to artist Bee Orgain, “I am a painter, drawer, purple cow collector, sci-fi novel reader, Goodwill frequenter, waitress, wife, and woman. In the future, I hope to add art teacher to that list.” Bee states, “this series explores personal trials that I’ve endured related to womanhood and maternity. Each piece is both a self-portrait and illustration of emotions I experienced following a lost pregnancy.”

Artist Lorna Lewis studied at Austin Peay State University and O’More College of Design. She is the owner of a small, alternative health practice in Clarksville. Lorna uses art to explore the individual soul through portrait creation. Her work is informed by her spiritual beliefs, her knowledge of health and the human figure, and her family struggles with Lupus and Leukemia. Lorna states, “I always spend real time with my subject whether it’s an animal, an adult, or child.”

The Framemaker is located at the corner of North Second Street and Georgia Avenue, across from the Clarksville Academy.

Black & Jones Perform at Open Lot – Nashville

Event-Session-4.jpg

Collaborative Performances Session 4 (3.3.10)

-Stone Jack Jones + Black & Jones
-Dust From 1000 Yrs. + Black & Jones
-Pineapple Explode + Black & Jones
-Blue Cadet Three + Black & Jones

Video and performance artist duo Black & Jones (Barry Jones and Kell Black) take on four sets of diverse music, unifying them into a cogent visual narrative. Black & Jones explore the history of cinema as visual metaphor for aural maturity. Black & Jones’ live, mutli-channel vJing uses contemporary technology to present archetypal narrative in the tradition of bildungsroman.

Session 4 is Open Lot’s fourth installment of this truly impractical collaborative experiment. A musical scattershot of touring musicians is paired up with an equally diverse group of Nashville-based visual/performance artists. Each pairing communicates only by email until the collaborative performance at Open Lot. What results is an improvisation born from necessity: quick, simple, and forcefully unadulterated.

Doors open at 8pm, performance begins at 8:30pm sharp.
$5 admission, $10 admission with open bar. BYOB allowed and encouraged.

This event occurs at Open Lot Nashville, 3.3.10

Concrete Comedy at Open Lot in Nashville

Open Lot.jpg

Concrete Comedy (2.13.10, 6-10pm)

Video and Performance Art by:
Ann Hirsch (Syracuse, NY)
Shepherd Alligood (Nashville, TN)
Brett Williams (Saint Louis, MO)
Amelia Winger-Bearskin (Nashville, TN)

As David Robbins put it in his article, “Concrete Comedy: A Primer”, concrete comedy is comedy that doesn’t rely on the suspension of disbelief. It’s hard to define and often overlooked when found, because it’s everywhere. Humor in a non-narrative or anti-illusionistic form is not necessarily set apart from everyday life like so much “museum ready” art is. The pieces in Open Lot’s Concrete Comedy go beyond the comedic object, utilizing the distinction between natural and fabricated situations and even the documentation of wry-smiling awkwardness.

Concrete Comedy will premiere Ann Hirsch’s (working here as performance artist-character “Anni Hi”) 90-minute one woman play-performance, “Scandalishious: Behind The Camwhore”, which dramatizes her real-life experiences as a YouTube “cewebrity slut”.

Anni Hi:
“In 2008 I began vlogging on YouTube as eighteen-year-old college freshman Caroline, aka SCANDALISHIOUS. Through dance, song, emo whining and copious ass shaking, I, as Caroline, found myself at the center of a viral movement, filled with dedicated fans and cynical haters. SCANDALISHIOUS: Behind the Camwhore chronicles my journey through this space of anonymity, desire and personal expression.

Viewers watch me perform as Scandalishious, in front of my webcam, with a projected live feed of my desktop as I talk to my audience, dance for them, watch homemade fan videos and gchat with fans and enemies. As the story unfolds, the audience finds me ensnared in a cyber affair with a fan that begins to bleed into my “real” life as “Ann” as well as see me entangled in a web of lies with an alleged fan, who attempts to blackmail Caroline into doing things she is not prepared to do….

The play explores female sexual and emotional web presence, how it can be beneficial and how it can be harmful for the women involved. It questions the existence of performativity itself as well as power structures as they exist on the internet. The performance plays with the idea of my “real” identity as it intersects with my own vulnerability and culpability.”

6PM: Amelia Winger-Bearskin pulls an Andy Kaufman as avatar “Amelia Coleslaw” inside the MMORPG Second Life.
6PM: Brett Williams speaks the language of French New Wave pluralism in his shameless-self-promotional BRETT commercials.
6PM: Emerging artist Shepherd Alligood befuddles the concept of the Confessional.

ALL LIVE AT OPEN LOT AND IN 3-D!!!

Wine and beer will be served with I.D. This is an all ages and free event occurring at Open Lot Nashville one-night only, 2.13.10.

Curated by Jonathan Lisenby and Open Lot.
