The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery is pleased to announce “daughters and / are everything” will open on July 7 (reception from 5 – 8 pm) and will run through July 30.

Peek received a BFA from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN (1995) and an MFA from the University of South Carolina (2000) in Columbia, SC.  Peek is an Assistant Professor of Art at SC State University in Orangeburg, SC, teaching all levels of Photography, as well as Art Appreciation and Basic Drawing.

The exhibit is made up mostly of photographic works from a series titled “daughters” created in the Summer of 2010. Concerning the subject of the artworks, Peek explains: “I spent most of the Summer preparing our house and 4 year old daughter for the arrival of our second daughter. I often encourage my students to make artworks that reflect their activities and interests. With daughters occupying most of my energy, time and thoughts, I decided to take my own advice and make some art about little girls.

The black and white photographs are printed from film using traditional darkroom processes. Many of the artworks were made by first photographing the subjects with a digital camera then projecting the images on drawing paper where they were manipulated by the artist. Finally, the projected image with the added drawing elements is then photographed with a film camera.

The exhibit also includes several drawings/paintings on canvas that also explore the concept of daughters.
